“Don’t Give Up”: Annalise Haigh on Finding Courage with Adventures

For Annalise Haigh, being part of The Adventures of Peacock, Chicken and the Pony They Rode Upon has been an experience full of learning, courage and joy. As a Second Echo Ensemble performer and backstage crew member, Annalise brings her whole self to this new musical - and encourages others to do the same.

Annalise describes her role as a ‘backdrop diva’ - not a back-up dancer. This new role created by SEE makes sure drop-dead gorgeous backdrop divas are never hidden in the back. Annalise beams when she talks about moving sets, helping the show run smoothly and working side by side with artists who live with and without disability. “It is such a good experience,” she says. “I love learning how the show works and seeing how diverse artists manage it all together.”

Annalise has embraced every part of the process, from rehearsal rooms to travel. Working with Second Echo Ensemble and Sydney’s Midnight Feast has inspired her to stand proudly in her own story. “I love SEE and Midnight Feast because they show you can just be who you are,” she says. “They help you find courage and not give up.”

Alongside performing, Annalise supports the team behind the scenes too. She helps keep office spaces organised and tidy, and maintains the choreography journal for the show.  She describes herself as “really independent,” and loves creating calm moments for others. “I like helping people find ways to relax, even during busy times,” she says.

One of Annalise’s biggest highlights so far has been rehearsing in Sydney and stepping onto the Sydney Opera House stage for rehearsals - a huge moment she never imagined possible. “It feels like a big step,” she says. “It is not just me, it’s all of us showing what’s possible.”

A dancer since she was young, Annalise brings that sense of movement, expression and spirit into every task - onstage or off. She is clear that her work with SEE has helped her grow as a performer and as a person. “It’s about confidence,” she says. “Don’t judge how someone looks. Be brave. Do your own thing. Be yourself.”

Annalise has a final message for others who see her on stage or behind the scenes: “Don’t give up. Find your courage. And remember - you don’t have to change who you are.”
